The Original and Classic Canasta Game
Classic canasta was among the most popular of all card games throughout USA history, ever since its peak popularity that appeared in the 1950s. It is more complex than most Rummy games and this is an important reason why it was so popular. Classic Canasta is still played today, mainly because of the easiest rules to understand out of all canasta variations. You can play it with 2 to 6 players but in most situations it is played as a 2 team partnership game.
Classic Canasta will be played by using 2 card decks that also include the jokers. The wild cards in this game are Jokers and twos. Also the 3 card has a special value in the sense that red threes are bonuses for those that hold them and black threes are stop cards and penalties if you are left holding them at the end of the game.
The object of classic canasta is to get the most points as possible and reach a target score that is set before the game begins. This is done through the creation of card sets and melding them. Contrary to the objective of most rummy games out there, in canasta you do not necessarily wish to go out as fast as possible. Although if one player goes out the game is over and scoring begins it is not usually a great idea to focus on going out fast.
If you are looking to play a classic canasta game you will find it that it is the easiest one to learn. The rules about drawing and melding are really easy to understand and probably the most difficult part for a player is to memorize scoring rules and bonus situations. If you are having such a problem we recommend that you simply print the scoring rules and use them while calculating the score at the end of the game.
Classic canasta still enjoys a lot of popularity and you will find it played in numerous countries from all around the world. The other game variations are also popular but not as popular as Classic Canasta. This is mainly because the other variations appeared as deriving from this Classic Game so we can expect to always have more players being aware of Classic Canasta rules than other canasta games.
